A Deeper Look

You know Drew Barrymore. Whether as the little girl in the most famous alien movie ever made, Ghostface’s first victim in the original slasher-satires, or as the star of a number of hit late 90s/early 00s romances that you’re probably still watching to this day. You know her.

But do you know that she started a skincare and beauty line back in 2013, with the idea of making prestige formulas and innovative packaging affordable and accessible to all? And by golly, I would say she’s (almost) accomplished it! To my knowledge, her line is the first created by a celebrity that I’ve found exclusively at a CVS.

To start with, how prestige is “prestige?” Not so much. The formula is lovely, but nothing to write home about. I love the use of seed butters (mango and cocoa, to be exact), but the texture is borderline sticky, which I don’t particularly love.

Additionally, the product identifies itself as a “mask,” but I think it’s more of a hybrid between a gloss and a balm. Moisturizing like a balm, but with a slight shine and a subtle tint reminiscent of a good gloss.

[For something to be a mask, I need it to be supremely thick and double as an overnight treatment, which this most definitely could not.]

Speaking of the tint, however – I am a sucker for a deep plum, and this one does not disappoint. It’s sheerer than some other tinted balms, but still adds a lovely (and classy) pizzazz to my lips. (Click here to see it on me.)

And how innovative is the packaging? Actually, it’s pretty great. As someone who has tried a lot (A LOT) of different lip balms in her life, I have never once seen a balm packaged in this way and I frickin’ LOVE it. (In case not clear in the photo, you have to twist the tube to push formula through small perforations in the angled tip, which is shaped like a standard lipstick.)

A traditional lip balm wouldn’t allow for a twist-up (because, well, lack of viscosity) but this being the perfect in-between renders the packaging all the more brilliant.

Overall, a surprisingly-elevated drugstore find.
